Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers brings a classic fighting game back to the Nintendo Switch with a fresh coat of paint and some modern additions. I feel that the combination of the nostalgic pixel art style of the original and the polished HD style is a nice touch, as you can choose your favourite look. The core gameplay remains true to the timeless mechanics that made Street Fighter great. I loved that this version also adds some new elements, such as the inclusion of Evil Ryu and Violent Ken, and an optional first-person mode that gives an interesting twist to the traditional fighting system.
The multiplayer options are strong, especially in local battles with friends or family. My friends and I had a lot of fun with the local multiplayer, as it really replicates the classic arcade experience. Playing online can be entertaining, but I’ve noticed that it sometimes struggles with connection issues, which can be a bit frustrating.
Ultra Street Fighter II feels like a tribute to an iconic classic. However, I feel it lacks some depth to keep it engaging in the long run, especially for veterans who are already familiar with previous versions. While it’s a worthy return for fans of the series, it does little to fully convince a new generation.
