Smash Ultimate not only has the most characters of any Smash game, but also the most unlockable characters. With around 60 characters to unlock, you'll be busy for quite a while. Fortunately, the video below provides two methods to speed this up. Both methods have specific sequences in which characters are unlocked, so if you're looking to unlock a particular character, you can check both and see which one allows you to unlock your desired character first.
- The first method is through Classic Mode (explained from 1:28). The order in which you can unlock characters in this mode depends on which character you use to complete Classic Mode. The 8 characters you start with have a "sequence" for unlocking other characters. For example, if you complete it for the first time with Mario, you'll face
Sonic to unlock him. If you then complete Classic Mode a second time with either Mario or Sonic, you'll unlock the next character in the sequence, which is Bayonetta. What happens if you choose randomly or reach the end of a sequence? Simple, there’s a unique line for when you complete Classic with a random character, and if you reach the end of another line, you'll unlock a character from that sequence. You can find the sequences for all characters in the video at 2:24.
- The second method is by playing regular matches (explained from 3:14). There are two rules here. First, you can only fight other characters after you've covered a certain distance, and second, there must be a 10-minute gap between the moments you unlock characters. There’s a way to work around this; it will take about half an hour to do this once, but you can unlock around 40 characters at once. Set the rules so that a match lasts 20 minutes and everyone has 1 life. Choose an Omega or Battlefield stage. Make Player 2 either a level 1 computer or a second human player. Keep moving left and right throughout the match. This is an important part: defeat your opponent in the last minute! If you control the second player yourself, you can easily throw them off the stage, but if it's a computer, it would be wise to deal some damage early on so you can throw them off more easily later. After this match, you'll be able to unlock a character. Here’s another crucial part: once the match is over, go to the home menu. When you reach the screen where you can choose stages, close the game and restart it. Start another match and try to lose as quickly as possible. You’ll then be able to unlock a character right away, as you’ve been moving around so much and can avoid the 10-minute wait by closing the game from the home menu. Just like with Classic Mode, there is a sequence, which you can find at 9:17.
