Sparkling Remaster with Challenging Levels and Smooth Controls
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania is a sparkling remaster of the first three games in the iconic franchise. It retains the core mechanic of rolling the monkey in a ball through colourful and challenging levels while modernising the graphics and gameplay for the Nintendo Switch and other platforms.

The controls are smooth and responsive, which is essential for the precision required in the later, more challenging levels. The game offers a vast array of levels that range from simple to very difficult, and the retro nostalgia of the original titles makes it a joy for older fans to return. Newcomers will also be drawn in by the accessibility and simple fun.

Banana Mania also features a multiplayer mode where you can compete against friends in various minigames. The minigames are quite nice, but they lack true classics or don’t feel quite like they did in the original games. That’s a bit of a shame. Monkey Target isn’t what it once was.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania offers a fresh and entertaining experience that I would recommend to both newcomers and veterans alike. It’s an excellent choice for anyone looking for a cheerful and challenging platform game on the Switch.

A personally refreshing surprise!
One day, I decided to dig into the offers of the PlayStation Store (the Switch version is similar), with the plan to purchase and try out a new game. I found several games that caught my interest, and from that selection, I chose Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania. I had already heard some people online praising the franchise, which also gave me more motivation to try out the latest game myself. In short, I was very surprised, Super Monkey Ball is real fun!

Super Monkey Ball falls into the marble genre, where marble literally means 'marble'. You move a spherical object around a course in an attempt to reach the finish line. The course in this game also includes bananas that make it fun to try to collect as many as possible (also necessary for missions). In Super Monkey Ball, that spherical object is a ball with a monkey inside. Now, in most marble games, you move your marble yourself, but Super Monkey Ball does something a bit more unique. Instead of moving the marble, you tilt the course itself here, causing the marble to move accordingly. Although I don't know much about games in the marble genre (this game is my first experience in the genre), I don't think this is done much in other marble games, and I find it really brilliant.

The game offers various game modes, each giving a unique twist to this simple concept. The main mode is, of course, the adventure mode itself, where you try to complete level after level, following a small story in between. All levels in this mode also have multiple missions attached to them, adding to the replay value. The other modes are smaller but not necessarily boring. In Reverse mode, you try to complete a level backward, in Dark Banana mode, you must not touch any bananas, and so on.

One thing that people unfamiliar with the franchise might want to know is that this game can sometimes be challenging, with inconsistent difficulty curves (sometimes there's a suddenly super difficult level, followed by a very easy one). Fortunately, in this game, you can buy an ability to jump, which can make some levels much easier. Even with a jump, however, you won't be able to clear most levels right away, so this game is only recommended for players who are patient and motivated to try the same level dozens of times before succeeding. Super Monkey Ball is a game that requires practice, you need to get used to the controls and the physics of the game, which can take a while, but from the practice itself, I personally had a lot of fun.

In conclusion, I am very happy that I tried something new and chose this game for it. It was very refreshing and surprising for me, and I try to seek out games that can give me such an experience as much as possible. In this case, definitely a success.

Challenging gameplay with disappointing controls and minigame adjustments
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania on the Nintendo Switch is really great. Especially because of the many minigames and the enormous amount of content. There’s always something new to discover. At home, we enjoy playing together and taking on the different challenges.

However, I do find the controls a bit less enjoyable at times, especially compared to the original. Particularly in the minigame Monkey Target, I had higher expectations. It doesn’t always feel very smooth and that can be quite frustrating. They could have definitely done better with that.

Fortunately, the rest of the minigames more than make up for it. The menus look nice and have a lot of style. It remains a fantastic experience that you should definitely try if you enjoy fun and challenge!
