Cute remakes, but with a twist
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl bring the fourth generation of Pokémon back to the latest platform! As someone who has been a Pokémon fan for a long time (and has played the original versions among others), I was happy to finally see remakes of Diamond and Pearl. Initially, the remakes didn't really appeal to me visually, but that didn't stop me from trying them anyway, and in the meantime, my opinion of the game, visually at least, has improved.

To evaluate this remake, it's interesting to take a look at past remakes. They always took the original material (region, story, and such) to ensure faithful remakes, but also expanded on it with a lot of extra content. Fire Red and Leaf Green had the Sevii Islands, Heart Gold and Soul Silver also included elements from the third game, Crystal. And finally, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire had the Delta Episode, the completely revamped Pokénav, and other fun new features. Of course, these remakes were also visually enhanced, so they truly played like the newest generation of Pokémon games at that time, and features and Pokémon introduced later were also integrated. However, with these remakes, things are different. They don't play or look like the newest generation of Pokémon games (not like Sword and Shield). This isn't the biggest problem, as I think that both this choice and the opposite would come with pros and cons. But unfortunately, this remake doesn't really bring anything new, unlike the previous remakes. The one big new feature is a revamped Sinnoh Underground, where you can now easily and catch many Pokémon (even Pokémon that you wouldn't be able to catch at those points in the game in the original games). However, this doesn't feel like enough. At least the Sevii Islands in Fire Red and Leaf Green were still a new location (partly accessible before and after the League), but the Sinnoh Underground was also in the original games, so this feels different. A big cave with only straight paths is also less interesting compared to several islands. But what disappointed me the most is that they didn't integrate anything from Pokémon Platinum. I would have liked to see the Platinum Pokédex (with 210 Pokémon instead of 150). Okay, the Distortion World is present in the remakes, but the place is not relevant to the story and you just go there briefly to catch Giratina.

Despite these shortcomings, at the end of the day, this is still a Pokémon game. This remake looks visually very good and the overall gameplay is also faster than the original games. The chibi design in the overworld is not for everyone, and at first, I wasn't really a fan either, but it does give these remakes their own charm. If you are a fan of the original Diamond and Pearl and want to play the games again, then this remake offers you almost the same experience in a beautiful new package. It's also definitely a good place to start for new players.

A blast to the past
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are remakes of the DS games Diamond and Pearl. These remakes do not deviate much from the original games. There are some improvements, like the Running Shoes that stay on all the time and some new additions, such as the Grand Underground. But other than that, these are just the DS games that you can now play on your Switch. In my opinion, they could have done more for this remake, but unfortunately not. It is still a good game, though, but that's because the original games were fantastic.

Super fun, but..
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl offer a nostalgic journey to the Sinnoh region with okay graphics and familiar gameplay. While they are a good choice for fans of the original DS titles, at times they feel a bit 'ugly' in comparison to more modern Pokémon games. I've always been a fan of the chibi art style, but in this game, it looks very unnatural. However, this game still offers a lot of exploration and gaming fun with nice additions like the Grand Underground where I've already spent a lot of time myself.

The battles do look really amazing.

One of the most enjoyable Pokémon games for the Switch!
I think this is one of the more enjoyable Pokémon games for the Switch. I really like the art style of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and the starter Pokémon are very cute. The main difference between this version and the other one, Shining Pearl, lies mainly in the Pokémon you can catch and the legendary Pokémon, not in the story or gameplay. So if you're undecided between the two, you can check which Pokémon you can catch in each version and decide based on which ones you like the most.

What are Pokémon swarms and how do they work?
Axelmans

After you've received the National Pokédex, you can find Dawn/Lucas in Sandgem Town. When you speak to her/him, they will suggest that you talk to their sister in their house (also in Sandgem).

The sister will provide information every day about a swarm of a specific Pokédex species: you'll find out which species it is and where the swarm is located. Each day, a new swarm will be generated from a finite list of random species, and each species will always have a swarm in a specific location. Once you're at the location, each encounter has a 40% chance of being the swarming Pokédex species in question. The list consists of Pokémon that are only found in the National Pokédex. Here’s the first part of that list (there isn’t enough space to list all Pokémon in one go, the rest will come in a second tip):
