Exciting survival horror with procedurally generated levels
Monstrum is a survival horror game. Personally, I am very weak when it comes to horror games. You don't need much to scare me, so this was exciting.

In Monstrum, the goal is to escape the ship via a submarine or a helicopter. But to do that, you need special tools and items. For the helicopter, for example, you need fuel, wire cutters, and the keys. Also, in Monstrum, you only have a limited number of inventory slots, which means you have to manage your inventory. You have to choose between your flashlight or that key you need for the helicopter.

The levels are procedurally generated, along with traps. This means that each playthrough is different. There are different types of monsters that can chase you in each playthrough, but only one can pursue you. This means that each playthrough could involve a different monster.

There are traps set up in a few places, linked to cameras. If they spot you, they will start beeping loudly, attracting the monster towards you.

However, because the levels are procedurally generated, this means that Monstrum has quite long loading times.

Personally, setting aside my weakness for horror games, I did not find this captivating. The monsters don't look scary, more odd. The graphics are decent and definitely show (or rather don't show) that you are playing a horror game. Unfortunately, a large part of the gameplay involves: go to objective A, pick up object A, take it to objective B, and repeat. This does provide enough opportunities for interactions with the monsters. The monsters and jump scares, although they did catch me off guard a few times, are not very captivating. You encounter the monster, get scared, run away, hide, and then continue with bringing object X to objective X so you can move on to the next one.

Not very engaging, but for someone just starting out with horror games, this will definitely be enough to scare them and provide a challenge.
