Holy moly what a game Oh. My. God.
What a game. When a friend told me about this game, I didn't have very high expectations. It looked like a pretty decent 2D platformer, but nothing more. Read more...
But in the end, I decided to give the game a try, which might be the best gaming-related decision I've ever made.
The art style is fairly simple, but it looks good. The controls. Oh, the controls. What amazing controls. Again, the controls seem quite simple, but it quickly turns out not to be the case, as you can unlock multiple abilities. The controls feel great and fit well with the art style.
Then there's the story. The story isn't very clear when you first play the game. For example, I didn't understand much more than that there was some kind of infection.
But the more you play the game, the more secrets you uncover, and the more you look up online about the lore, the clearer it becomes.
Everything makes sense, there's a reason behind everything you do in the story, and even if you don't know the full lore, the story is still, I can't really explain it. There's something about the story that's so... special. It's the kind of story that keeps you up at night, because you can't stop thinking about it.
As someone who mainly plays Mario games and was used to stories that consist of "Princess kidnapped, go save her," I can only say that Hollow Knight has an absolutely amazing story, the kind of story I've never experienced before.
No matter how good this game is, there are some minor issues. The pacing in the beginning isn't great and it's annoying how long it takes to get a map, but again, these are just minor issues.
Something else I haven't mentioned that doesn't affect how enjoyable the actual game is, but still puts into perspective how impressive Hollow Knight is, is that the game was made in just over three years... By only three people!
This game, better than most triple A games made by hundreds of people, was made by three people in three years.
