Worthy sequel to the original Crash Trilogy!
Crash has had a rough time after the original trilogy, with games that were mediocre and/or completely different from the original. But more than 20 years later, we finally have a worthy fourth game: Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time! This game picks up where Warped left off in 1998. Finally back to a 2.5D platformer, focused on breaking crates and challenges. On top of that, there are also innovative elements, the most important being the Quantum Masks that provide new and unique platform scenarios. Think of switching between dimensions, floating jumps, time slowing down, and reversing gravity. The other additions are smaller but still nice, like skins for Crash and Coco. The levels are also very beautiful and detailed, making it a visual delight.

For a platformer, good controls are of course important, and Crash Bandicoot 4 succeeds in this aspect. Double jumps, slides, and even slides followed by a jump; it all feels smooth and comfortable. Controlling Crash is very enjoyable. It doesn't feel exactly the same as in the original or remastered trilogy (especially the jump after a slide slows you down quite a bit now), but I was able to adapt to it fairly quickly. The gameplay variety introduced by the Quantum Masks also keeps it fresh and challenging.

However, there is something important that I feel compelled to mention, and that is the requirements for 100% completion (or in the case of this game, 106%). Crash games can already be quite challenging, even if you're not going for all the collectibles, but this game pushes you to the limit if you want to collect and unlock everything. There are a lot of gems to collect, and then there are also very difficult relics to collect where you have to complete the level as quickly as possible, break all the crates, and finish the level without losing a single life. This is very difficult (especially because levels are now much longer) and takes a long time. So, I cannot recommend this to just anyone. The game is still very enjoyable if you ignore the collectibles, but then you will have finished the game in just a few hours. However, I can still recommend the game in this case!

What are all the hidden gems in the regular levels of Crash Bandicoot 4?

In every level of Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, there's a hidden gem to be found. The difficulty of locating these gems varies quite a bit, but there's a good chance you might miss at least one. The video below showcases the 38 hidden gem locations in the standard versions of the levels. It doesn't cover the locations of hidden gems in the N. Verted versions of these levels (I'll cover that in a different tip), but I can already tell you that the location of the hidden gem differs between the standard and N. Verted versions for each level.

Secrets:
Where can you find all the hidden gems in the N. Verted versions of the levels?

This tip is similar to another one I shared earlier. However, this time it's about the locations of the hidden gems in the N. Verted versions of all 38 levels of Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. From my own experience, I can say that these were even better hidden than those in the standard versions of the levels. Therefore, the following video will definitely come in handy:

Secrets:
What are Time Trials in Crash Bandicoot 4?
Axelmans
2186
When you start a level that you've completed before in Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, you'll find a timer at the beginning. Once you hit it, the timer will start, and boxes will change into yellow boxes with numbers on them. Your goal is to race through the level as quickly as possible and achieve the lowest time. Breaking the yellow boxes with a number on them will temporarily stop the timer for a few seconds.

Depending on your time, you'll receive a time trial relic of a certain type. There are 4 types, ranked from easiest to hardest: sapphire, gold, platinum, and purple (developer time). To achieve 106%, you must earn at least the platinum time trial relic in every level. Lastly, here are a few tips:

- Only start the time trials after defeating the boss, as this unlocks the so-called "Triple Spin." This will give you the necessary speed. You can also learn "Slide-Spins," where you slide first and then perform a spin. However, this is tricky to time and learn.

- It's crucial to understand how the characters and Quantum Masks work, as there are sections where you can speed through if you know what you're doing.

- Time trials can only be completed in the regular version of the level, not the N. Verted version.

- You might find a demonstration of the time trial for a specific level on YouTube to help you out if needed.

Secrets:

How to Obtain N. Sanely Perfect Relics in Crash Bandicoot 4?

To earn the N. Sanely Perfect Relics in Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, you need to complete each level with a perfect score. This means you must collect all the boxes, defeat all the enemies, and complete the level without dying. Here are some tips to help you achieve this:

  • Explore Thoroughly: Make sure to explore every nook and cranny of the level to find hidden boxes.
  • Practice Makes Perfect: Don’t hesitate to replay levels to master the layout and enemy patterns.
  • Use Checkpoints Wisely: While you can use checkpoints, remember that dying will affect your perfect score.
  • Utilize Character Abilities: Each character has unique abilities that can help you navigate levels more effectively.

Once you’ve successfully completed a level with all criteria met, you’ll be rewarded with an N. Sanely Perfect Relic!

It’s possible to earn an N. Sanely Perfect Relic (a skull-shaped relic) in every level of Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. However, this is much easier said than done, as you can only obtain it by completing the level while breaking all the boxes, and without dying even once. Here are a few additional notes (comments + tips):

- Be sure to collect all the coloured gems first, as in some levels you won’t be able to break all the boxes if you miss one.

- You can retry bonus sections as many times as needed, as dying in one of these sections doesn’t increase the death counter.

- It’s highly recommended to control your character with the D-pad, as it offers much more precision than a joystick.

- The double jump is very handy, but in some situations where you need to be quick, it can cause you to lose too much speed. It’s important to learn when a single jump is sufficient.

- Keep a guide open on your computer or phone that lists the locations of easily forgotten boxes. Personally, I used the IGN site, which discusses this for each level (link to IGN).

- For each level, you can choose to go for the Relic in either the normal version or the N. Verted version. You can technically earn the Relic in both versions, but for 106% completion, it’s enough to do this in just one version for each level.

- It helps to play through the level a few times without trying to get the Relic, so you can memorise it a bit. I definitely recommend this for Bears Repeating, Building Bridges, Crash Landed, and The Crate Escape, as these have auto-scrolling sections where you can’t miss any boxes, or you’ll lose your chance at the Relic.

Good luck! This is a tough challenge, but certainly not impossible. You can do this!
