A true indie gem! Celeste, along with Undertale, was one of my first steps into the world of indie games, and clearly, I started with two great games because both provide an immensely enjoyable gaming experience.
This game is a platformer that follows the journey of a girl named Madeline to the top of Celeste Mountain. The levels are composed of multiple screens. Each screen presents a platforming challenge, and upon overcoming it, you can progress to the next screen. The movement mechanics are incredibly simple (2 jumps and clinging to walls), yet surprisingly, the player is challenged in many different ways, requiring mastery and strategic use of these abilities. The game is relatively challenging, but fortunately, it does not employ a lives system, allowing you to retry immediately upon failure. This sets a promising tone, and it only gets better as the levels are non-linear, offering numerous optional paths with additional challenges and collectibles. The most common collectibles are strawberries, but there are also cassettes and hearts that unlock more levels. If you feel up to the challenge, at a certain point, you can even attempt to complete a level without dying (for a golden strawberry). Read more...
As the cherry on top, the game also makes an effort to tell a story. Without spoiling too much, it revolves around Madeline, the character you play as. This narrative element is very much appreciated since most platformers do not delve into storytelling (which is not a flaw, as platformers typically focus more on action), and it is well executed here.
If I haven't conveyed it clearly enough: play this game! It is highly enjoyable, challenging, and not overly long if you prefer shorter games. It is a perfect example of a "hidden gem." Hide. Cijfer:
