Fun arcade shooter with humor and simple gameplay
Abarenbo Tengu & Zombie Nation is an '80s/'90s inspired arcade shooter that immediately took me back to the atmosphere of classic games from that era. The story is quite bizarre: America is taken over by space aliens who have turned all people into zombies, and it's up to you to save everyone. The game doesn't take itself too seriously, which added an extra layer of humor for me. It feels like the kind of game you once bought for a bargain during a sale and then forgot you had. You play by shooting everything in sight while navigating a course and avoiding enemies. There are plenty of lives that respawn after a few moments, but if you get hit by a lightning bolt, you lose almost everything except one life. The controls are simple, just like the gameplay loop. There's a handy rewind feature and a quicksave option, which is very useful if you make a mistake. There's also an edit mode that allows you to fly around the map and view everything, but it doesn't add much. Overall, Abarenbo Tengu & Zombie Nation is a decent game. I would recommend it if you can get it for a low price.
